A SCHOOL IN...
Roger  Beeckmans
2009 52' 16 mm

IN ALBANIA
Loredana BIANCONI
2009 59'45'' vidéo
« Go and see what we left behind... » With these words in mind, a filmmaker journeys into a discovery of an almost abandoned and little known country: Albania. Her film is an impressionist journey, a moving tale cast in footprints, vivid memories and free thinking narration that takes an overview of the past sixty years of the country. The communist dictatorship seems to be jumbled up with the neo-liberal democracy which dominates every detail of daily life, the lost beauty of the landscapes and the limitless stories of emigration. Little by little, developing over various appearances, the film unveils a tormented country whose inhabitants are living more and more outward looking lives as they struggle to retain a sense of belonging in their own homeland.

Warsaw, Poland at the end of the 1970's. The workers' revolt, violently repressed by the authorities mobilises a group of individuals who create KOR, or Workers' Defence Committee. Heir to the communist regime opposition movement since the end of the second world war and supported by figures rising up against social injustices since the 1920's, KOR is comprised of committed people, with simple yet efficient methods, unusual ethics, the will to shatter the state information monopoly and to establish an independent workers' organisation. In 1980, KOR's activities lead to the birth of Solidarnosc, the country's first independent Union. By offering an insight into KOR's actions and words with three of its protagonists, the film recounts the story of one of the ends to Communism in Europe.
