This film brings together discussions in class and testimonials of teenagers from emigration. They expressed themselves freely. Some of them were born in Belgium. Do they feel Belgian? The question often remains unanswered, even if they say without hesitation that they like to live in Belgium, that they hope to find work and start a family there.
Starting a family brings back to culture and religion.
I discovered, without any real surprise besides, that the words LAICITY, MIXITE, EQUALITY do not have the same meaning at the pediment of the schools and under the minarets of the mosques.
Boys told me that they would never marry a girl from here, too liberated in their eyes, and that they would go get their wife to the village. Young girls replied that today girls in the villages have evolved, that they are no longer ready to “close their mouths”. Two girls agreed to be filmed as long as they could keep their veil. They chose to wear it by submission to God and not to men. They feel they do not have to receive lessons from boys.
On the subject of gender diversity and equality between girls and boys, there is still a long way to go. Just hear the boys’ opinions and observe how girls and boys occupy space in a classroom. As at Mass in the synagogue and the mosque today, girls gather on one side and boys on the other. So that boys are not disturbed by the presence of girls. No one seems preoccupied with girls’ trouble when sitting next to boys.
Students of “a lesson in tolerance” grew up. They left the world of childhood and reached that age that adults describe as ungrateful. They ask themselves the questions posed by all adolescents, also those from emigration:
Is it more difficult for Mohammed than for Pierre, Paul or Jacques to complete studies and find work?
How to choose between the Koran and Reason?
What is the meaning of the words citizenship, identity?
Brecht said, “When the curtain closes, the questions remain open.”
This is so in this documentary.{{'DUREE' | translate}}: 52'
