Through the life and writings of Panda Farnana, the first Congolese intellectual to have been awarded a diploma in Belgian higher education in 1909, the film proposes a reflection on the beginnings of colonialism both in Belgium and in the Congo.
A totally unknown story, an atypical character astride two worlds, a destiny going against clichés and traditional ideas, a man alone against all. In a word, a magnificent occasion to rewrite history.
Raised by an unmarried female Belgian artist, Paul Panda Farnana was the first Congolese to have been awarded a diploma in higher education in Belgium at the beginning of the 20th century.
Appointed as an agronomist, he returned to the Congo as the first Belgian civil servant with black skin. He underwent there the apartheid and little by little had to renounce his various posts due to harassment. He returned to Belgium in 1914 and, when war was declared, enlisted as a volunteer. He was caught and taken back to Germany where he was held until the liberation in 1918.
The years spent, both in the Congo and German camps, drove him to try to improve the living conditions of his fellow countrymen. For ten years, he was to devote all his energy to demanding equality between whites and blacks through education, and making those in charge responsible, under the virulent attacks of the colonial press.
Through Panda, we explore the causes which he defended: the abolition of forced labour, the importance of education for all, disassociated from religion, the admission of Blacks within the decision-making authorities of the colony and international representation, and elementary respect for human rights.
Panda Farnana was the only African invited to take part in the 1st National Colonial Congress of Brussels, destined to cure the wrongs inflicted upon the colony by the politics of Leopold II.
He closely collaborated with the Afro-American W.E.B. DuBois in the organisation of the Pan-African Congress of Brussels in 1921.
