Portrait of Eric SLEICHIM or a story about the saxophone.
Brussels, autumn 1990. 150 years after it’s creation by Adolphe SAX, there’s again another young Belgian bitten and drive by the same love. With his Blindman-saxophone quartet, he’s developing the existing sound-environment of the range of the saxophone family. It’s a fight between the instrumentalist, knowing all the possibilities of his instrument, and the composer, reflecting on his world and his music. Brussels, autumn 1991. Eric SLEICHIM is searching and forging new saxophone-sounds. Equally appreaciating all the possible sounds produced on the instrument he uses them in combination with new breathing-techniques and with unusual and classical harmonic structures. The results are really unique compositions. Architectural elements, abundantly present in those huge barracks, play their role. They are often integrated in his concerts, not only for their sonic qualities but also as alienating elements. Important for his own and Blindman’s tone-colour are the revolutionary mouth-pieces “with turbulence-chambre” made by François LOUIS (Brussels) and a new cellular microphone-system, developed for saxophone by Michel DICKENSCHEID (Liège). Two more Belgians obsessed with enlarging the existing sound-environment of the saxophone.
