“Charleroyal, Charles of darkness, Charleston…”. Thus Léo Ferré called his friend Charles Szymkowicz in the correspondences which it maintained with him. Ferré and Szymkowicz, two artists of disproportion.
Two universes which intermingles. Two characters “Cul et chemise”. In Szymkowicz it Ferré there in the air and conversely.
One does not go without the other. In their two universes, bubbles a musical, poetic and pictorial matter magma.
Volcano “Szymkowicz” spouts out a lava of colors and characters who challenge.
It is a true casting in fusion which drips sometimes gigantic fabrics of this painter except standards.
Charleroi is its cocoon of childhoodand life of artist. Poland is its history and that of his Polish Jewish parents fleeing the anti-semitism of the Thirties. Tuscan Italy is the territory of its major friendship with Ferré. It is on these three territories that we will travel to give an idea of creative dimensions, pictorial, literary and human of this artist fastened with his workshop of Gerpinnes as a single-handed sailor who takes pleasure in dropping anchor in fullstorm. The ink of its pots and its tubes of colors do not stop making waves on its fabrics which resemble veils of caravels when they are still virgin. There will be letters of Léo Ferré written to his friend and read by Michel Bouquet. These letters will be invited they even from the creation of a portrait of Ferré in gestation in the workshop of the painter. This portrait, and its advance, will cross the film until its final result. It will be the first « fil rouge ». The second « fil rouge » will be the creationof a self-portrait also in gestation which one will also find of time to other until his result at the end of the film.
The occasion for the painter to tell itself while soliloquizing in its workshop. What has it to tell us in connection with art, on its life of artist and on the life of the world is never banal. It is starting from these two works in progress that the various sequences and meetings of the film will be articulated. Finally musics and songs of Léo Ferré will invite themselves as if they left the fabrics of “Charleroyal”. The film will in the final analysis be a kind of self-portrait in the manner of painters.
