1904 : Gustave MARISSIAUX, the man who loved Venice, photographed the coalmines as if they were Venice, in rose, blue, green and sepia. 1984 : There are two of them, each with two eyes. They are discovering MARISSIAUX, discovering "Venice" in rose coloured slides and "The Coalmine" in blue, green and orange-red coloured slides.
Venice, the living museum surrounded by water. The Coalmine, the vast and menacing tombstone-town. The coalmines have been abandoned. Their stacks have been felled. They no longer blacken the skies of Liège. MARISSIAUX’ photos live on after them whereas those who know the pictures look for the mines, discover the remains, photograph the remains, the ruins, the inaccessible ghosts and make their way round the town pursuing ephemeral evidence. At the end of the journey they go down the mine and the circle closes : there are no more coalmines, only photographers.
