LUMUMBA, THE RETURN OF A HERO
-
DVD INDISPONIBLE ACTUELLEMENT.
-
61 years after his assassination, Patrice Lumumba returns to his homeland. "The Congo returns to the Congo", as one of his children put it.
Lumumba was a nationalist leader intent on using his country’s enormous wealth for the benefit of his people. He became the first prime minister in Congo’s history on June 30, 1960, when the country gained independence after 80 years of Belgian colonial rule.
Seven months later, he was assassinated in Katanga province along with two of his closest political allies: Joseph Okito and Maurice Mpolo. Their bodies were dissolved in sulfuric acid, and only one of Patrice Lumumba’s teeth remained. This “relic” was taken from Lumumba’s corpse and kept secret by a police commissioner until his death in 2000.
The assassination of the nationalist and anti-colonialist leader was followed by the rise of the dictator Mobutu, who was able to remain in power until 1997, thanks to Western support. These events had a gigantic impact on Congo’s history, and are still shaking the country to this day. Historical research has shown that Belgium, the United States and the United Nations all played a role in the murders of Lumumba, Okito and Mpolo. In 2001, a parliamentary commission admitted Belgium’s moral responsibility for these crimes, and in June 2022, the Belgian government officially returned Lumumba’s tooth to his children. A milestone in Belgian post-colonial history.
This film follows the highly political celebrations for the return of Lumumba’s tooth to the Congo, and questions the legacy of one of the great political leaders of decolonization.
